There are confirmed cases of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in the Upper Susitna Valley. It is a highly contagious bacterial infection that is usually spread by coughing or sneezing. Babies are particularly vulnerable. It usually starts with mild cold symptoms or a cough, which can turn into severe coughing spells that can last 10 weeks or more. An untreated, infected person can spread whooping cough for several weeks.
