Sunshine Community Health Center (SCHC) accepts Medicare and is working hard to ensure that anyone, including seniors with Medicare can access high quality and affordable primary and preventive health services.
Thousands of older adults and persons with disabilities in Alaska rely on Medicare coverage for healthcare coverage. As the baby-boom generation ages into Medicare over 10,000 people in the U.S. are enrolling in Medicare every day and over the next 15 years, Medicare’s enrollment is projected to increase almost 50 percent to more than 80 million in 2030.
SCHC accepts all forms of Medicare insurance including:
- Part A (Hospital Insurance) – inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Part B (Medical Insurance) – certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
- Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) – plans offered by private health insurance companies to provide your Part A or B Medicare benefits such as HMOs and PPOs. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, most Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren’t paid for under Original Medicare.
- Part D (Prescription Drug Insurance) – provided only through private insurance companies that have contracts with the government.

Health Centers Generate Savings for Medicare
Community Health Centers play a critical role in the delivery of high quality, comprehensive primary care to nearly 2.4 million Medicare beneficiaries. Despite serving a large number of Medicare beneficiaries with multiple and complex medical conditions, health centers deliver significant savings for the Medicare program. A recent study analyzing Medicare claims data found that the total cost of care per patient with Medicare is 10-30% lower for patients using health centers, compared with patients seeking care at private physician offices and hospital outpatient clinics.
SCHC provides a system of care aimed at keeping older adults out of hospitals and living the healthiest life possible with:
- clinical staff specially trained in the care of older adults,
- high-performing team-based care that improves care for seniors,
- strategies to support and coordinate with family caregivers,
- a process that include a patient’s own goals in their care plan with Annual Wellness Visits,
- the use of proven geriatric care models to address specific issues,
- a systematic approach for coordinating transitions of care with other organizations, hospitals or specialists.

Chronic Disease Management & Behavioral Health Services
This January, 2018, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services increased the services covered and the per beneficiary per month amount allowing Health Centers to provide better care for patients with chronic disease management or behavioral health needs. As a result, Medicare patients at SCHC will experience more coordinated and improved quality of care with the addition of case management services, chronic care workshops and increased behavioral health services.
Medicare patients with complex or chronic conditions can benefit from case management services with nurses trained in better primary care for seniors, better management of medications and improved transitions from hospital to home. Additionally, SCHC offers Living Well Alaska Chronic Disease Self Management workshops to help seniors learn skills to feel better, embrace life and spend less time in the doctor’s office or hospital.
Stress and anxiety and depression are also associated with complex or chronic conditions. SCHC’s Behavioral Health team provides integrated care with the primary care team to provide holistic, patient centered care. Our Licensed Clinical Social Workers can help address burnout that may contribute to poor self-care, give seniors tools to self-assess their current state of motivation and establish a successful plan of action for a healthier future.
Dental Services for Seniors
Medicare dental coverage can be provided under Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan but will vary by plan and contracted private insurance company. SCHC’s dental department offers routine preventative dental care for seniors as well as full mouth rehabilitation.
Original Medicare, Part A and B, does not cover routine dental care however, some procedures related to hospital care or surgeries may be covered. Alternatively, coverage may be provided through a joint Medicare and Medicaid program called PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly).
If you don’t have Medicare Advantage or private dental insurance ask about our sliding fee schedule for dental services.
