4 Tips to Keep Your Mind Sharp As You Age

None of us want to age; however, aging is inevitable. Susceptibility to age-related diseases increase, and the risks of complications grow with it. One of the conditions prevalent in old age is dementia, a very debilitating disease that affects one’s mental ability. Find out how you can keep your mind sharp.

1. Keep Your Mind Active

Engage your brain in challenging activities such as puzzles and problem-solving games, or anything that challenges you mentally within your skill level. Learning new skills can also help your mind stay sharp. Doing sports that require you increased concentration like golf or marksmanship enable you to improve memory and your ability to do other tasks as well.

2. Cardio Exercises

Not only can exercise help improve blood circulation but it also helps slow down shrinking of the brain as we age. Since cardio workouts increase heart rate, it also stimulates the heart to pump more oxygen throughout the body and into the brain. Older individuals can opt for a much easier way of exercises such as brisk walking, yoga, and meditation since some cardio exercises may be too difficult. Find pace that is right for you now and increase from there.

3.Socialize

Experts say that socializing can help in our brain’s health. The increased interactions with others improve brain function as it continuously exercises the mind, through conversation and visual stimulus while it wards off dementia and Alzheimer’s because of the brain’s maintained cognitive function.

Socializing can also help maintain mental agility.

4. Eat a Balanced Healthy Diet

Not only does eating a healthy diet help you with controlling cholesterol, but it also helps you in keeping a healthy brain. Eating a variety of nuts and seeds, blueberries, avocados, beans, and whole grains, are just some of the types of food that help keep your memory sharp. 

5. Never Stop Learning

Learning helps to keep your brain active. Learning or improving your education can help you function better mentally in old age. Engaging in a variety of new, challenging exercises will engage different parts of your brain and help to maintain your brains ability to communicate with each its different regions and process information.
