At Sunshine Community Health Center, we believe that supporting families means more than just offering healthcare—it means nurturing the foundations of trust, connection, and resilience in the home. This summer, we’re offering a virtual parenting series based on the renowned Love and Logic® approach—a method that empowers caregivers with the tools to raise responsible, respectful, and confident kids.

🧡 What Is Love and Logic?
Love and Logic is a parenting philosophy developed by educators and child psychologists Jim Fay and Dr. Charles Fay. It focuses on raising children in a loving way that allows them to experience consequences, make choices, and develop problem-solving skills—all while strengthening the caregiver-child relationship.
Rather than yelling, threatening, or bribing, Love and Logic gives caregivers a structured way to stay calm, set limits, and let kids learn from real-life experiences. It’s not just theory—it’s a hands-on method with a long-standing record of success in real-world parenting.
🌱 Introducing Our Parenting Series
Our Parenting with Love and Logic series will meet weekly on Zoom from 3–5 PM, beginning Thursday, July 3 through August 7. The series is open to all caregivers—parents, grandparents, foster families, guardians, and more.
What you'll learn:
How to share control while maintaining boundaries
Why empathy before consequences leads to better learning
Techniques to reduce power struggles, whining, and arguing
Ways to build your child’s confidence and responsibility
How to reduce parental stress and stay calm during chaos
This series isn’t about becoming a perfect parent. It’s about becoming more present, consistent, and confident—even in the most challenging moments.
Registration is required by June 26. Call 907-733-9292 to reserve your spot.
🔍 Love and Logic in Action: 5 Practical Parenting Tools
Whether or not you can join us this summer, here are five Love and Logic strategies you can start using today:
1. Offer Choices to Build Independence
Giving kids small, age-appropriate choices teaches decision-making and reduces defiance.
Examples:
“Do you want to do homework now or after dinner?”
“Would you like to use the blue towel or the green one?”
The key is to give only choices that are okay with you—either way, you win.
2. Lead with Empathy
When consequences are necessary, lead with empathy rather than anger:
“That’s really sad. I know you were looking forward to that.”
“I’m sorry this happened. What do you think we can do differently next time?”
Empathy preserves your connection with your child and encourages reflection instead of rebellion.
3. Don’t Argue—Use Calming Phrases
Repeating calm, consistent responses helps avoid power struggles:
“I love you too much to argue.”
“What did I say?”
“I’ll be happy to talk when your voice sounds like mine.”
These phrases set the tone and model emotional regulation.
4. Let Logical Consequences Do the Work
Allowing kids to experience the results of their actions—without rescuing—teaches responsibility. If they forget their coat, they feel cold. If they break a toy, it doesn’t get replaced. These lessons stick more than lectures ever could.
5. Recharge as a Caregiver
One of the foundations of Love and Logic is caregiver self-care. A calm, regulated adult is better equipped to guide children through life’s challenges. Take breaks, find support, and refill your emotional cup so you can show up at your best.
