A Simple Blood Test, A Longer Tomorrow: Why Prostate Cancer Screening Matters

June is Men's Health Month, and while many men are willing to work long hours, provide for their families, fix things around the house, and help others when needed, too often they put their own health last.

One conversation. One annual wellness visit. One simple blood test.

Those small actions could make a life-changing difference.

Understanding Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among American men, yet when caught early, treatment options and outcomes are often significantly better.

The challenge is that prostate cancer often develops quietly. Many men experience no symptoms at all during the early stages, which is why routine conversations with your healthcare provider and appropriate screening can be so important.

What Is a PSA Test?

PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen.

A PSA test is a simple blood test that measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels do not automatically mean cancer is present, but they can indicate that additional evaluation may be needed. Many factors can affect PSA levels, which is why discussing your results with your healthcare provider is essential.

The PSA test is one of the most common tools used to help identify potential prostate concerns before symptoms develop.

A Personal Story About Why Early Detection Matters

For Sunshine Community Health Center's Community Relations Manager, Sierra Winter, this topic is deeply personal.

Cancer has touched her family more than once.

"I lost my grandpa to cancer. Years later, I lost my dad to cancer too. Watching someone you love go through that journey is heartbreaking. Watching it happen twice changes the way you think about healthcare forever."

Sierra recalls the difficult moments spent sitting beside hospital beds, attending appointments, and helping make decisions no family wants to face.

"When someone you love is sick, you find yourself wishing for more time. More birthdays. More fishing trips. More stories. More ordinary days that suddenly don't feel ordinary anymore."

While not every cancer can be prevented, Sierra believes many families can spare themselves some heartache by taking advantage of the screenings available to them.

"If a simple blood test can help catch something earlier, why wouldn't we do it? If it gives someone a better chance to be here longer with their kids, grandkids, spouse, or friends, it's worth the conversation."

Early Detection Saves Lives

Across Alaska, organizations are working together to make prostate cancer screening more accessible.

Alaska Health Fair, Inc., in partnership with the Aurora Integrated Oncology Foundation and Alaska Men's Run, provides free PSA screenings throughout Alaska because they recognize that early detection can save lives. Their statewide program helps make screening available to men from communities large and small.

Research shows that widespread PSA testing has played an important role in identifying prostate cancers earlier, often before symptoms develop. Earlier detection has contributed to improvements in survival rates over time.

Today, more than 3.5 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer are still alive.

Talk With Your Provider

Prostate cancer screening is not a one-size-fits-all decision. Factors such as age, family history, personal health history, and individual risk should all be part of the conversation. The CDC and other health organizations recommend discussing the benefits and limitations of PSA screening with your healthcare provider to determine what is right for you.

That conversation can begin during your Annual Wellness Visit.

Free PSA Testing at Our Community Celebration

Sunshine Community Health Center is proud to welcome Alaska Health Fair, Inc. to our Community Celebration on August 1st.

Eligible participants will have access to FREE PSA blood testing, helping remove financial barriers to this important screening opportunity.

Stay Here Longer

Your family wants more time with you.

Your children want more memories with you.

Your friends want more adventures with you.

And your community wants you here.

A PSA test is quick. It is simple. It is just a blood draw.

But the peace of mind, early detection, and opportunity it may provide could mean so much more.

This Men's Health Month, schedule your Annual Wellness Visit, talk with your provider about prostate health, and consider whether a PSA screening is right for you.

Because the people who love you would rather spend time making memories with you than wishing they had more time.
