Sunshine Says: Try Not to Die in July

Summer in Alaska is short, and we're all trying to make the most of it.

We're fishing, boating, hiking, flying, camping, road-tripping, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. While we encourage everyone to enjoy the season, we also know that Alaska adventures can be unpredictable.

That's why Sunshine Community Health Center's July Health Incentive is focused on something many of us put off: completing an Advance Directive.

What Is an Advance Directive?

An Advance Directive is a legal document that allows you to share your healthcare wishes before an emergency happens. It can also identify someone you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable to speak for yourself.

Many people assume Advance Directives are only for older adults or people with serious health conditions. The truth is that unexpected accidents, illnesses, and emergencies can happen to anyone at any age.

Completing an Advance Directive helps ensure your voice is heard and can provide guidance and peace of mind for your loved ones during some of life's most difficult moments.

A Personal Story

For Sunshine Community Health Center's Community Relations Manager, Sierra Winter, this topic is deeply personal.

"When my dad was battling cancer, he never completed an Advance Directive. Like many people, I think he was afraid of what the paperwork represented.

When he could no longer make decisions for himself, that responsibility fell to me. I had to make choices about his care without knowing exactly what he would have wanted.

Looking back, I believe I made the right decisions, but in those moments, the uncertainty was incredibly difficult.

An Advance Directive isn't just for you—it's a gift to the people who love you. It provides guidance when they need it most and peace of mind that they are honoring your wishes.

"While conversations about serious illness and end-of-life care can be uncomfortable, having those conversations ahead of time can spare loved ones from carrying the burden of uncertainty when emotions are already running high.

Why It Matters

An Advance Directive is not about expecting the worst.

It's about being prepared.

It's about making sure your family doesn't have to guess.

It's about making sure your healthcare providers understand your wishes.

And it's about giving yourself a voice, even when you cannot speak for yourself.

Sunshine Says: Try Not to Die in July

Wear the life jacket. Buckle the seatbelt. Tell someone where you're going. Complete your Advance Directive.

Because Alaska adventures are unpredictable, but your healthcare wishes shouldn't be.

Throughout the month of July, community members who complete and submit an Advance Directive to Sunshine Community Health Center will receive a free emergency vehicle escape tool (window hammer and seatbelt cutter) while supplies last.
